On International Youth Day this year, Vietnam came alive with color, energy, and purpose as hundreds of young people gathered for the “Youth Initiatives Fest 2025.” The event was more than a festival—it was a showcase of how Southeast Asia’s youth are rewriting the story of development.
From entrepreneurial projects tackling waste management to community campaigns on gender equality and education, the Fest highlighted the diversity of youth-led solutions. One group of students demonstrated a low-cost water filtration system for rural households. Another presented a social enterprise connecting farmers directly with urban consumers, cutting out exploitative middlemen.
What unites these projects is a refusal to wait for change. Instead, youth are creating it, showing that innovation doesn’t have to come from big corporations or government labs. With support from the UN and local organizations, their work is feeding into Vietnam’s national development strategies, making clear that the Sustainable Development Goals can’t be achieved without youth at the center.
The Fest was a reminder of the unique power of gatherings: when young people meet, exchange ideas, and collaborate, entire ecosystems of change can emerge. For Southeast Asia’s youth, the future is not something to be handed down—it’s being built, one initiative at a time.
